As an advertising student, I was initially nervous about how much I could have to offer TAG and how much they could have to offer me, but this nervousness could not have been more misplaced. Interning with TAG gave me a unique opportunity to apply my creative skill set to a professional industry in more ways than I could have expected.
Whether it was writing press releases, developing social media content, or working and documenting important local events, I was able to grow and diversify as a creative professional, all while meeting important professional contacts.
As much as I was able to do with my time at TAG, there are still plenty of things like document layouts and web design that another intern could bring to the table and add to their portfolio. Working with great people and for a great cause makes this a uniquely rewarding internship that you can get nearly anything out of, it's all about what you choose to make out of it, and how you can best be of help.
Working with TAG gave me a lot of experience. I learned how to write press releases, use call to action software, sharpened my Excel skills, staffed TAG events, expanded my professional network, and even learned how to work on the TAG website. No matter your current experience level, I highly recommend applying to be a TAG intern. A TAG internship is what you make of it. It can apply to many different fields such as political science, nonprofit organizations, transportation studies, advertising, event planning, and communications. There are many different ways to help.
When I began my internship with TAG, I did not have much understanding of what happened behind the scenes for our Texas transportation to improve. I have been pushed out of my comfort zone to gain a better grasp on advocacy within our community and with our community leaders. The Green Light Houston event was one of the first time I assisted with a nonprofit organization's event, it was a huge opportunity. I was able to meet judges, congressional members, and many other influentials in Houston. Our hard work was even featured in the newspaper, further spreading the message for transportation shifts needed and spreading the ideas accumulated by the judges. Later on, going to the Capital in Austin to advocate and having a Judges event opened my eyes up to the impact TAG has in Texas transportation. TAG's internships has helped me curate my professional skills as a recent college graduate. The opportunities to learn and grow with TAG are expansive and many other internships do not offer that kind of growth. I am thankful to work with such genuinely kind, driven individuals who are always ready to give me advice and feedback to succeed in my role.
